Green Building Council
It is a busy time for the construction industry in Namibia evident from the building sites cropping up around the city centre and regionally one after the other from industrial parks, residential areas and business malls. It is well known that buildings consume a considerable amount of energy from construction to maintenance. Taking this into considering, it is an opportune time for non-profit organisation such as the Green Building Council of Namibia, who advocate for “Greener Buildings”, to continue to raise awareness for Eco-Friendly Buildings and introduce globally accredited tools that will enable future construction projects to incorporate sustainable forms of construction. As a young growing economy it has become even more important to ensure that each participating entity works towards building Namibia’s foundation sustainably.
Nedbank Namibia sponsored N$15 000.00 towards the 2nd Green Building Council Convention. The Green Building Council of Namibia was established in 2012 to address and create awareness through facilitating green building practices, technologies and operations.
The Convention was held in Windhoek at the Ministry of Mines and Energy from the 22-24 April. During the convention a two day assessor training course was also conducted. The Green Star assessor training programme is a South African Accredited Professional Course. Over 60 participants representing different areas in the construction sector underwent the training course and participants ranged from engineers, environmentalists, architects, civil society and representatives from non-governmental institutions and Namibian government to affiliated Green Building Council representatives from Kenya and Germany.
