Why mathematics matters: Investing in skills that will shape Namibia’s future

9 September 2026

As Namibia advances its ambitions of becoming a knowledge-driven and industrialised economy, the importance of mathematics cannot be overstated. Mathematics is the language of science, technology, finance, engineering and innovation. It is a cornerstone of economic growth and a critical enabler of the skills required to compete in an increasingly digital and data-driven world.

The quality of a country's mathematics education is often a strong indicator of the strength of its broader education system. Higher learner participation and improved pass rates in mathematics create a larger pipeline of future engineers, data analysts, accountants, scientists, teachers, technology specialists and entrepreneurs. Conversely, poor performance in mathematics can limit access to tertiary education opportunities and constrain the development of critical skills needed for national development.

Across many schools, mathematics teachers continue to require ongoing training and support to effectively deliver content and strengthen learner outcomes. Addressing these gaps is essential if Namibia is to achieve its educational objectives and produce the talent required to support national development priorities outlined in the country's long-term growth strategies.

This is where partnerships between the private sector, educational institutions and government become increasingly important.

Recognising the transformative role that mathematics plays in social and economic development, Nedbank Namibia has contributed N$99 000 to the Namibia Mathematics Institute (NMI) to support programmes aimed at improving mathematics teaching and learning across the country. The funding will help enable teacher development workshops and provide practical learning materials that are designed to strengthen both teaching effectiveness and learner performance.

The impact of these programmes is already evident. Recent NMI workshops conducted in Keetmanshoop in the Karas Region revealed significant improvements in teacher competency after targeted intervention. While only 4 of the 22 participating teachers initially achieved scores above 50% in a mathematics competency assessment, post-training results showed substantial progress, with 16 teachers scoring above 50% and seven exceeding 70%. Similar improvements were recorded during workshops in the Omusati Region. These outcomes demonstrate the value of investing in teacher capacity as a direct pathway to improving learner achievement.

Importantly, the benefits extend far beyond the classroom.

Improved mathematics education contributes directly to Namibia's broader development agenda by strengthening the country's future workforce. As industries increasingly rely on analytical thinking and quantitative skills, mathematics becomes a strategic national asset.

The NMI’s work also aligns closely with government efforts to improve educational outcomes and enhance the quality of teaching and learning nationwide. By supplementing existing public sector initiatives with targeted interventions and educator support, NMI helps accelerate progress towards shared national goals. In addition to teacher training, the institute provides direct support to learners, particularly in communities where academic performance remains a challenge. Through practical programmes such as Map and Money Maths, learners are taught mathematical concepts using real-life applications, helping them understand how mathematics relates to everyday decisions, financial literacy and future career opportunities.

For Nedbank Namibia, the sponsorship is an investment in the country's future human capital. The bank’s Chief Financial Officer, Victor Maengahama said: ‘At Nedbank Namibia, we believe that education remains one of the most powerful tools for unlocking opportunity and creating sustainable economic growth. Mathematics, in particular, equips young people with the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in the modern economy.’

Maengahama added: ‘As money experts who do good, by supporting the Namibia Mathematics Institute, we are helping improve mathematics outcomes today and contributing to the development of the next generation of mathematicians, engineers, scientists, teachers and business leaders who will drive Namibia's progress tomorrow. Creating opportunities for learners to strengthen these skills is an investment in the future prosperity and competitiveness of our country.’

As Namibia seeks to build a resilient, innovative and inclusive economy, mathematics education must remain a national priority. By investing in educators and strengthening partnerships that support quality education, organisations such as Nedbank Namibia are helping to ensure that more young Namibians are equipped with the skills needed to solve tomorrow's challenges and seize tomorrow's opportunities.
