African Continental Road Cycling Championships thunder into Namibia
African Continental Road Cycling Championships thunder into Namibia

Peak hour traffic in Windhoek was virtually brought to a halt recently, as the cream of Africa’s cyclists slugged it out for top honours in the team trials of this year’s continental road race showpiece event.

In the end, the South African team proved a class apart by winning the team event. This came as little surprise to many cycling pundits, who predicted that the SA team would prove too strong for the rest of the field. But the brilliant showing of the two Namibian teams participating in the event was warmly applauded by the relatively small, but hugely enthusiastic crowd cheering on the local heroes.

The SA team eventually ended in first place, closely followed home by the Namibian national team, while the Libyan team took the bronze medals. The Namibian Federation team also ended among the top 10 finishers with close to 20 African nations competing in the championships.
