Internet Banking Security
Our internet banking is secure
NetBank, Nedbank's internet banking service is supported by rigorous security measures – we adhere to standard international security requirements, and additional measures are in place.
Our technology conforms to an international standard for encoding information passing between an online user and a web server. All information on client security access codes is stored in an encrypted format and thus known only to the client.
Client identification (profile number) and PIN access.
In addition to the pin and profile number, NetBank also requires a complex alphanumeric password. Other security measures include:
- Branch controls (identification is required for opening accounts, subscribing to Internet banking etc).
- Profile numbers (these are not derived from client account numbers - for greater security these are randomly generated on issue)
- Server safety (behind firewalls, regular checks, transaction limits): All servers used for access to client data and transactions are behind firewalls and Nedbank does regular vulnerability checks.
Lock out after three incorrect pin attempts.
The bank enforces transaction limits and clients can lower these limits if necessary. These limits are used to control the total funds that can be transferred or paid out in any given period.
NetBank uses daily limits to control the maximum amount of funds that can be transacted in any one day.
Key logging software or spyware records key strokes on computers. This can compromise information, such as passwords, pins and other confidential data, stored on the computer. This software can be used for the purposes of identity theft.
Safety measures to protect yourself from key logging software:
- Use only licensed software on your PC and where possible try to ensure that your system, browser and mail are operating on the latest service packs
- Install recognized anti-virus and desktop firewall software to protect against viruses and other malicious programs (including spyware). Update this regularly. This software is available from all leading computer suppliers
- Ensure that no one has unauthorised access to your PC and that no person can physically install unauthorised hardware and software on your PC
- Ensure your PC is programmed so that e-mails cannot be sent without your confirmation. Look under the Help file of your e-mail application to find out how to do this
- Don't open suspicious e-mails as these could harbour virus files
- Ensure the secrecy of your profile number, PIN and password at all times. Never give this information to anyone
- Regularly change your PIN and password
- Report any unauthorised movements to the bank as soon as possible
Should a client experience fraudulent activity on their account, the bank will always investigate each incident according to the relevant facts. Where clients have acted negligently, they will be liable for any loss incurred as a result. Examples include compromising PIN, profile and password.

Update on Internet banking (Netbank) functionality in Namibia.
The SMS functionality advertised on the Netbank Internet banking site is not available to Namibian Internet banking users. This is due to the incompatibility of different cell phone networks in South Africa and Namibia.
For security reasons, the following functions are not possible on the Internet banking product offered by Nedbank Namibia:
- once-off payments which are not to any of your listed beneficiaries
- adding more approved beneficiaries
- once-off payments to "other Nedbank accounts" not listed as beneficiary
To add beneficiaries, please contact your personal banker or relationship manager. New beneficiaries can also be added in writing, fax or e-mail if these indemnities are in place. Please direct this instruction to your personal banker or relationship manager.
The revised functionalities ensure that Internet banking offered by Nedbank Namibia remains among the most secure Internet banking services in southern Africa, to offer you peace of mind when it comes to your finances.
